Limit state analysis for existing bridges

Ana Mandić Ivanković, Jure Radić, Zlatko Šavor

Abstract

Readers are cautioned that the existing bridges were in many cases designed in accordance with outdated procedures and that they do not meet the present day reliability criteria. It is therefore highly significant to analyse limit states of such bridges, so as to properly plan their maintenance. Limit state analysis procedures, developed through practical application on big arch bridges on the Adriatic, are described. The effects exerted by traffic load on girder structures are considered, and a special emphasis is placed on the effects of wind action and seismic action on arches.

Keywords
wind action, existing bridges, reliable traffic load
